READING GLASSES FRUSTRATION

By Mark M. Lewis, MD, FAAO

If you are 45 or over and have good distance vision without glasses but now find yourself increasingly more dependent on reading glasses then you’re in good company. In fact, over 60 million Americans struggle with reading glasses every day. If you are like I was, and the millions of others who are struggling to see up close, then you’re probably frustrated tasks that used to be easy such as, trying to read your watch, grocery labels, material at work, menus, your cell phone, newspaper, books, and on and on. Fortunately help is now available through a new procedure called CK (Conductive Keratoplasty). Over the years I watched the refinement of this procedure with great interest, and was delighted when I felt comfortable enough with its success and good track record to have it on myself. It has been about 2 years since I had the procedure on myself and have been very pleased with the freedom from reading glasses it’s given me. Over that same period of time I’ve helped many patients obtain greater freedom from their readers as well.

CK treatment to improve near vision is a non-laser, non-cutting, safe, 3 minute procedure that uses Radio Frequency to reshape the eye. The radio frequency creates a band of tightening in the mid to outer area of the corneas which causes a steepening of the central portion of the cornea that we look through. This steepening then allows the eye to see things up close and gives a greater freedom from readers. Approximately 2/3 of patients will need the procedure on only one eye, while the other 1/3 requires it on both. If the procedure is done on just one eye then it is normally done on the non-dominant eye. This procedure should not be confused with “Mono-vision”. Unlike mono-vision in which a person wears one contact for near and the other for distance, CK creates a blended multi-focal visual function which provides the patient with functional distance vision as well as improved near vision. So with both eyes open, the vision is blended with the distance vision coming through the dominant eye coupled with the near vision coming from the non-dominant eye. The brain then puts the information together giving a broader range of visual function from distance to near without the imbalance between the eyes associated with mono-vision. This procedure is also effective for people in the following categories: 1. Previous LASIK surgery or Cataract Surgery and now need readers for near vision. 2. Farsighted who are 45 or over who have lost both their near and distance vision.

If you are on of the increasing large number of “baby boomers” and you have been years without a complete eye exam, we invite you to call and schedule an appointment at which time we can also discuss with you CK or other options for improving your vision.
