Dr. Cohen in Surgery

Clear vision is one of life's greatest gifts.   In time, cataracts can rob us of precious eye sight.  However, new techniques in cataract surgery are astonishing.  Around 99% of our cataract surgery patients see better after surgery, most experience no pain and are able to resume their normal activities within 24 hours.

"No Stitch" or "sutureless" cataract surgery
, as it is sometimes called is a method by which ophthalmic surgeons remove a cataract (cloudy lens) and implant a new intraocular lens (IOL) through a self-sealing incision.

How does "No Stitch" Work?

The doctor creates a tiny tunnel incision with a surgical instrument.  Through this incision is placed an ultrasound device called a phacoemulsifier, which dissolves the cataract (cloudy lens) and vacuums it out of the eye.  A new lens is then implanted through the same incision (no stitches necessary).  The eye then seals itself due to the way the incision was made.

What are the advantages of "No Stitch?"

    - Faster recovery, which gives you a quicker return to your normal lifestyle.
    - Shorter surgery time, which reduces the chance of complications.
    - Better vision, more rapidly.
    - Less surgically induced astigmatism, which means fewer changes in your eyeglass prescription.

Am I a candidate?

"No Stitch" cataract surgery is a highly successful procedure.  Yet, there are some instances when stitches are required.  Your preoperative testing, examination, and discussion provide the doctor with needed information.  However, it is not until during the operation that the doctor decides what is best for you.

Dr. Cohen's technique requires no stitching, no needle injections, no patching and results in no bleeding.  Therefore, it is not necessary to stop taking blood thinners such as aspirin or Coumadin.  Special implants are also available to correct astigmatism and eliminate the need for reading glasses.
